Two Shining New Comedies in 2013-14

What new shows do you all recommend? I don't have a lot of time for TV, but when Chel and I get the chance we always have Parks and Rec, The Goldbergs, and Brooklyn Nine Nine in our Hulu queue.

Parks and Rec is getting worse as it ages, a la The Office. But it's still worth a chuckle. The Goldbergs is a much funnier version of Modern Family and The Middle. Chel watches both of those as well, but I've given up on both. If Modern Family was just the Dunphy's I'd watch it - I guess that's what The Goldberg's reminds me of. Same comedy - different time periods. Brooklyn Nine Nine is Andy Samberg at his finest. If you liked him in Saturday Night Live, you'll like Brooklyn Nine Nine. It has a very dry humor to it. Chel says she likes it more and more as the characters develop. I tend not to worry about those things.

I've heard True Detectives is good, but that takes a much larger time investment.

  1. I watched about 5 minutes of Brooklyn NineNine... and have no desire to see anymore... But i get to fast forward the end of it each week from the other shows I DVR. I still like Parks and Rec...even as a lesser form of itself is better than most other comedies I've watched.. Same with Community. I also get a bit of entertainment out of New Girl.

Shameless and House of Lies (the latter having less to catch up on and only 30 min) are on my regular schedule, but those are Showtime. I've been watching Almost Human which is pretty entertaining.. not complete comedy by any means, but is good for some laughs... but another that takes a bit more attention and time, I suppose.

  2. True Detective has been really, really good. Well worth the time. But I don't treat it like normal TV. It's like watching a move for me.

  3. Also, I really don't watch TV comedies outside of Adult Swim any more. Flight of the Concords kinda ruined them for me because it was so damn good.

  4. Give a couple episodes of Goldbergs a shot. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the same type of humor as Dirty Work, which everyone gave a B- but me.

    1. Rick and Morty, Rick and Morty, Rick and Morty. It's a half-hour cartoon on Adult Swim, and it is glorious. It's based on Doc and Marty's relationship in Back to the Future, and expands on the fundamental weirdness of an old scientist hanging out with a teenager. Dan Harmon, the creator of Community, makes it, and it's like the craziest concept episode of that but with no limits on what they can film. It's my favorite new comedy in some time.

I watch Brooklyn 99, but I'm not crazy about it. It's made by Parks and Rec people, so I'll give it repeated chances, but I wouldn't be terribly upset if it got canceled. Speaking of Parks and Rec, I agree that it's going downhill. I was rooting for a cancellation after this season, but it looks like they have at least one more new season coming.

True Detective is amazing, and is only 5 episodes in with 3 more to go. It's not that much time in viewing, but as the darkest show on TV, it might consume a lot of your thoughts.

    2. That sounds fantastic. I can't wait to get Adult Swim again.

  5. Parks and Rec is fine. Swanson has some great lines. It probably has one more season and then it will be done. The documentary comedy was great when done by The Office and Parks and Rec also did a fine job. Not every show is going to be Seinfeld. We need to get over that.

Um, Brooklyn 99 looked dumb and when I saw it, it was confirmed. Didn't enjoy it.

The best show on television is the How I Met Your Mother. It is in its last season and has continually given solid shows. There are only a few episodes I didn't like or found funny.

Big Bang Theory makes me laugh.

Yeah, Community was pretty good but it became repetitive and monotonous.

I haven't seen New Girl. Mainly because my ex ex g/f started watching it and enjoyed it and I didn't want to watch something she liked. Perhaps I can give it a chance.

Never heard of True Detective. Seems fake.

    2. That the Big Bang Theory doesn't make me laugh? Nope, it does.

  6. Sounds fake? Doesn't HIMYM feature Neil Patrick Harris as a ladies' man?

    1. Yes, Jon, that is called acting.

Also, New Rule. Sarcastic remarks in the head do not always come off the same as in writing.

  8. It's a TV show, Drew.. it's fake. :-p

The best thing about Big Bang Theory, is the youtube clips where they remove the laugh track. See how much you laugh when they're not coercing you! :-p

I'm going to start True Detective soon. Although, maybe i should wait until i can watch all 8 in a row!

  9. I vote Big Bang Theory as the most overrated comedy in 20 years. I can't watch more than 60 seconds of it.
