2014 Academy Awards

These are the nominees for best picture:

Why is Her part of this list?  Any of you see this film?

Which one of these do you think is the best?  12 Years a Slave may be the winner.  Thoughts?

  1. Gravity is the only one I've seen. It wasn't good. The rest are on my library or Redbox free code list.

  3. Her is only good if you buy the premise of a man falling in love with his phone's operating system. Otherwise, you'll just find yourself scoffing the whole time. I was able to buy it, because I'm pretty sure the singularity is on its way, and artificial intelligence will one day be smarter than all of humanity combined.

Wolf of Wall Street is my favorite, but as we've been discussing on Facebook, the old white people that make up the Academy will never vote for a movie that begins with the main character snorting coke out of a hooker's asshole. The winner will either be 12 Years a Slave or Gravity, with American Hustle as a possible spoiler. I'm betting on 12 Years for my office Oscar pool.

  4. How does Her compare to Lars and the Real Girl?

  5. I loved Lars and the Real Girl, but it doesn't go as far as Her goes with its premise. The sex doll is for emotional growth, but the phone OS is a body-less person with its own wants and needs. Her exists on a scale between romance and science fiction. It's very much about the central relationship, but it's equally about the singularity. I strongly recommend it as a thought experiment

  6. Jon, you think 12 Years a Slave wins? Didn't you really like that movie?

  7. 12 Years a Slave is a near-flawless masterpiece that every American should see, and it's only fitting that it should win Best Picture. In the battle between it and Gravity, I think actors prefer 12 Years, while the writers didn't even nominate Gravity. I think Gravity will win more awards, but 12 Years will win the big one.

  8. Watched Captain Phillips last night. Probably go B or B-. Not as intense as Argo, but similar setup. I thought Hanks and the Somalia guy did a great job. My favorite guy was the boat driver. I think he spent 90 hours in the same position. I'm curious to see how it differed from what actually happened. Like Argo, Chel didn't know the ending and liked it more.
