Just watched a pretty solid documentary called Best Worst Movie. It's about the cult phenomenon surrounding the movie Troll 2. I didn't even know that was a thing. It's a thing. I'm fairly certain I saw it or parts of it as a kid, but I don't know 100%. I definitely would love to catch it at a public screening. It really is like Rocky Horror, which I enjoyed in person.
What other bad movies would you want to watch in public?
Starship Troopers and Blade Trinity are definitely up there for me. Possibly Mortal Kombat as well.
Troll 2 is by far the best worst movie. I, too, saw that documentary and have to say it earned its title. Terrible acting, soundtrack, and plot but contains a classic line - "You can't piss on hospitality. I won't allow it!"
ReplyDeleteAnother great, bad move is They Live. Let's be honest, nothing is as bad as Troll 2.
Best Worst Movie is a great documentary about bad-movie subculture, something that does look awesome. Todd's always talking about The Room screenings, which is universally regarded as one of, if not the worst movie ever made. I'd absolutely go to one of those if I had the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteStarship Troopers is a bad movie if you take it straight. I've read a fair amount of articles about how it's actually one of the great satires, on par with something like Dr. Strangelove. Not sure I buy it, but I can see the comparison.
The night before Phil Crone's wedding, me and a group of people hung out in our hotel room and watched The Change-Up, a gross-out body switch comedy. It was pretty terrible, but calling out plot twists and the ending before they happened was fun, though in retrospect, it might've just been fun for me. Van Helsing is on my all-time bad movie experience list, but that might've had more to do with the pint night crowd than the actual crappiness of it.
I actually really enjoy Starship Troopers. When I first saw it as a teenager, I thought it was great for all the wrong reasons, kind of like Ryninger and RoboJox. But I picked up the book shortly after watching it and realized how heavy it was on the satire. After that, I enjoyed it in a different light. That, however, does not change the fact that the lines are still corny and THAT ALIEN JUST SUCKED HIS BRAINS OUT! I also looooove that Casper Van Dien started and the chick who played Hershey started off as high schoolers. Nice casting.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of The Room and I would love to see it in a public viewing. Was The Room intentionally bad though? I don't know. Guessing not.
The Change-Up was filmed in Atlanta. It has brought shame on this great city.
Van Helsing was truly awful. THE FAT GUY! COMIC RELIEF! And that's all I remember about that movie. I vote that next time we're in Evansville, we challenge the undergrads to a basketball game and a pint night. But we sponsor the pint night and hope that their hangovers equalize the playing field.
Back to the doc, I think it was well done. Hell, there was a protagonist, antagonist and a tragic character even. That these people are like this in real life makes it hit a bit harder. That poor lady who played the mom. I hope to God she's in therapy. And I love the unwavering bravado of the Italian director. They did a nice job letting him show his opinion, which was all over the place. You could tell that he is genuinely hurt by the criticism and that his ego won't let him accept or admit it. Finally, the fact that the movie is a fuck you to vegetarians is great.
