Hated Directors
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel just arrived in Bloomington today, and I'm likely going to see it within the next week. That got me thinking about a Side Pieces topic. Riley has repeatedly voiced his intense displeasure for Wes Anderson, or the white Tyler Perry, such that I can't really imagine ever doing an Anderson movie as a mediocre pick. Riley would surely veto, quickly and forcefully. I don't think I feel that negatively about any director, but there are certainly a handful I don't like. I've never understood what's so great about John Hughes. I haven't seen any of his 80's high school movies, but the clips I have seen look awful. Michael Bay is garbage, but all the 'splosions still appeal to my animal brain, such that I've seen almost all his movies. What about you guys? Are there any directors whose style immediately ruins a movie for you?

Michael Bay ruins everything. I'm not sure if I feel nauseous after his movies from the directing or the constant camera shake.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything Wes Anderson has done.
But if you walk into a Michael Bay movie on purpose, you know what you're getting. It's like when you're traveling and you're staying somewhere that isn't exactly a culinary mecca. While I can't stand Applebee's in general, I'd much rather go there than chance it at some local place without reference. Applebee's is a known quantity.
DeleteI usually don't like Tarentino movies - even after watching them - or Ron Howard for that matter. John Hughes was a great film director. He made iconic movies such as The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. You will not like them, Jon, because they capture the 80s but that is your fault. :-P
ReplyDeleteMichael Bay and Bruckheimer are decent. I enjoy Joss Whedon's and J.J. Abrams' films as they are establishing a great product.
Maybe I just don't get 80's movies. I recently tried watching the Goonies, and hated it. Fucking Corey Feldman.
DeleteI'm with you on Ron Howard. I think he's extremely overrated. He makes about the simplest movies possible and then tries to dress them up for awards. We obviously part ways on Tarantino. What is it about him that bugs you?
The Goonies is a fantastic movie. Does it suffer a bit in the third act? Probably. The deus ex machina (a valuable pirate ship emerges right at signing time) settles a side storyline that provided motivation, but the main storyline was just kind of a coming-of-age thing. Sure, there are some very 80's aspects, but the 80's truly were different times. Maybe it's not an A, but I think it holds up well in the B range.
DeleteMy Wes Anderson hatred began when I relented and allowed him to choose Rushmore when Office Space was also playing, I didn't go to movies often and didn't see Office Space until 3-4 years later. There were two douchebags who sat behind us laughing their asses off the whole movie and I'm pretty sure it was their 2nd or 3rd time seeing the movie. A couple of his other movies I've seen also sucked, and guess what- same actors playing virtually the same characters. The movies look good, sound good, have likeable stars (Murray, Hackman, Wilsons) but they suck. Obviously I didn't learn from the experience as I have objected but stopped short of vetoing in our little movie club. Which brings me to another guy- Refn or whatever his name is- hated Drive, and Only God Forgives was an abortion. Speaking of- did Phil Crone ever live tweet his viewing of that movie? He's 0 for 2 and not getting a 3rd at bat for me.
ReplyDeleteI just looked up what Anderson has made. The previews to his movies are funny - but those turn out to be the only funny scene in the whole movie.
ReplyDeleteWes Anderson is one that I'll always see his movies eventually. Can't think of any that i absolutely have to avoid every time.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that Wes Anderson is basically off the table for this thing. I was worried I was going to have to watch the Darjeeling Limited or some garbage.
ReplyDeleteOh, just you wait!
