Game of Thrones 40: The Children

Well, we have 10 months to talk about this one, so make it count!

What does Jon Snow know now? We all happy to see Mance back? Where the hell does Stannis come from? Can you fit that many horse through Castle Black's gate so fast? What exactly is a proper northern drink, anyway?

Can we get Maester Aemon in every episode? Every damn one. Speaking of not Maesters... what's going on with the Mountain?

Welcome back Emilia Clarke, am I right? But, why didn't Daeny tell the ex-slave he can work for his old master, instead of this slave contract thing? Burning toddlers now, Drogon... not cool. Did you get teary eyed for the dragons? Where are your dragons!?!?! Oh, in the catacombs, where you put them.

Skeletons! Any other Skyrim players get excited for this? Any body else get a quick sad feeling for Hodor again? Is that a tree, or a person... it's no raven with three eyes! How's Bran gonna fly?! He could have used that ability in episode 1.

How about Cersei, letting her dad in on the family secret? Shouldn't he be proud.. that's a lot of Lannister blood in those grandchildren!

Who would you have bet on between Brienne and the Hound? More perplexing.. how the hell did Arya and The Hound get away from the gate... I questioned this before, and still do. They wouldn't just let them walk away would they? Logically speaking, Littlefinger and Sansa may have paid good money for Arya, right? Oh well.  Should Arya have given him mercy? Is he dead?!  Anybody forget she was carrying that coin around?

Oh, Tyrion... you just couldn't leave without causing a ruckus, could you? What'd you think about Shae's last moment? In the end, Tywin shit, but not gold, eh? Give me some thoughts on that conversation! Any guess as to where that crate is headed?

I'm sure there's more to talk about... and much to speculate on for next season, especially if you like Dornish things!

  1. FINALLY! SWEET, SWEET JUSTICE! Of all the villains of the show, Tywin was by far the best. Still the best non-Tyrion dialogue in the show has been Tywin & Arya back in season 2. Gotta hand it to him... He was striking deals to the end. I have no idea where things are gonna go from here. Tywin brought stability, if nothing else. Now, I guess we're gonna have Jamie and Cersei ruling for the puppet Tommen? Hmmmm....

As for Tyrion, I got Oberyn flashbacks. I thought he had overstepped, and we all know what happens to those who overstep. The final scene with Shae was the last straw there. Shae may be one of the stupidest characters in TV history (as in "of low intelligence" stupid). I didn't feel bad for her in the least. And now we have Tyrion, in a box, going.... somewhere. I've thought his destiny all along was to end up wherever Dany was, so I wonder if that's finally happening. And now we possibly have Arya heading that way?! All the sudden Westeros is only the 2nd most interesting continent in whatever planet this happens to be.

I still do not care about Bran's story. I'm glad he finally made it to the Ticket Oak so he can get his World Cup Finals tickets.

Stannis arriving in the North was fantastic. This could go a lot of directions. I wouldn't mind a Roose Bolton/Stannis showdown.

The fight between Brienne and The Hound was BRUTAL. I love it when they both decide they aren't gonna be knights and just turn it into a street fight. Westeros isn't exactly a land of chivalry, is it? I think Vegas would have put the line at The Hound -180... so you know Brienne was gonna come out on top.

As for next season, all I have ever known about the books is that things careen right off the rails for books 4 and 5. So are we going to Dorne? Fine by me. We killed off so many characters this week/season, we're gonna need someone new around to hate.

  2. Next season is going to be weird. The books/show could reasonably end after book 3/season 4, so a TV series hitting the reset button this late in its run is something new. Books four and five essentially start a new trilogy, with Dany as queen, Tyrion as exile, Arya as assassin, and Bran as some kind of tree-person. There's been a bit of it already, but I think season 5 is going to be when the show really starts to spoil future books, and I'm as excited as I've ever been.

Phil's absolutely right that this was their best season, and this was the strongest finale. I have two issues with it, and one doesn't count. First, the Jaime-Cersei stuff is strange, and again reflects the show misunderstanding that based on the way it was edited, Jaime absolutely raped his sister. Cersei may be going back to Jaime as a way to get out of marrying Loras and stay in King's Landing, but it's problematic at a minimum. The other issue is that I kept checking the time on the episode, sure that they weren't going to be able to fit everything in. Turns out it was exactly as long as it needed to be, because they never planned on including stuff I thought was going to be included. There are some weird, spoilery cuts/changes that I'm not going to get into, and will just have to wait and see where they go from here.

Other than that, this episode lived up to expectations. Dinklage continues to crush it, everything surrounding Arya was superb, Dany beginning to unravel was great foreshadowing, Hodor-rage made a welcome reappearance, and the filming of Stannis's cavalry charge was a new take on something I've seen many times before. Strong ending to a great season.

    1. Watch for them spoilers Jon, they don't say why Arya is going to Braavos! :-p

The problem with the Jaime/Cersei scenes... is that it was just poorly directed. The intent was to show a consensual scene, which would have made this episodes moments much more understandable. And since they were all clearly to blind/stupid to see that they made a rape scene, they already had the season wrapped up and couldn't change anything. I chose to look at the Jaime/Cersei scenes and relationship how they should have been done, and just internally hate the makers for how they botched it.

I know what you're talking about with the things not included.. and apparently they had no intention of including it, ever. And possibly not at all in the series... and that just seems unfathomable to me. I'll send you a link or two on FB about it.

I don't think it'll feel like a reboot at all next season.. there's still plenty to go on around King's Landing and the Wall, we'll just be venturing out to a couple other regions more readily.

    2. Any chance you can send those links to me as well. I'm curious to read about how they could cut out that one thing that we were all expecting.
